No. 001 · PDF · Optimize
Free the Tools is a growing shelf of everyday tools — compress a PDF, convert an image, tidy some JSON — that run entirely inside your browser tab. Twenty-five so far, all free, no account, no ads.
The pledge
Small tools should be private, open and free to use.
No strings
No limits, no sign-up, no ads.
Private
Tools run on your device. Every page carries a security policy that stops it sending data to any other server, and the automated tests fail if one tries.
Open
All code is public under AGPL-3.0. Read it, run it yourself, or improve it.
No tracking of you
No cookies, no IDs, no analytics scripts — only anonymous daily totals for how often each tool is used, liked and works.
The shelf
Every tool is free and works offline once it has loaded, numbered the way a shop numbers stock — Compress PDF is No. 001. One tool, HEIC to JPG, is still made to order: the WebAssembly build it needs trips the same security policy that keeps every other tool honest.
25 in stock, 1 made to order, and anyone can build the next one.
Build the next one
Free the Tools is built in the open, by Sapience and by anyone who wants to help. This is the real path a request takes to a live tool — a pull request, not a meeting.
Request
Someone requests a tool on GitHub. Others vote with a 👍.
Accept
A maintainer accepts it and marks it wanted.
Build
A contributor builds it from the template and opens a pull request — most tools take an afternoon.
Review
Automated checks run, and a maintainer reviews it.
Ship
Once merged, it goes live here with the builder's name on it.
Parked for now: HEIC to JPG. Its conversion library calls a function the security policy blocks, and needs a rebuild before it can ship.
Sapience designed and built Free the Tools' interface, from the sidebar and search to every tool's own page — the shop-style product shots, the catalogue, the anonymous stats, and the security policy that backs the promise in code, not only in copy.
